Your protector cracked. Your screen didn't. That was the point

How to get the old one off cleanly, why a cracked protector should be replaced the same week, and what the crack pattern tells you about the impact it took.

A protector that has cracked has done the job it was sold to do. The energy that broke it is energy that did not reach your display. Replace it within the week and there is nothing else to think about.

Why it needs replacing soon

A cracked sheet is not a damaged sheet that still works at a lower standard. Tempered glass is under tension by design, and once the surface has failed, that tension has been released. It will not absorb a second impact the way it absorbed the first — it will simply come apart further.

The other reason is the edge. A crack that reaches the perimeter opens a path for dust and moisture under the adhesive, and from there the sheet starts to lift. Lifted edges catch on pockets and cases, and that is usually how the second crack happens.

What the crack pattern tells you

A spider with a clear centre means a point impact — a corner, a key, a fall onto something small. The centre of the spider is where it landed. If that point is over the panel rather than the bezel, the protector took a hit that would otherwise have gone into the display.

A single line running edge to edge with no centre is usually flex rather than impact: the phone bent slightly in a back pocket or under a knee. That kind of crack often appears with no memorable event behind it.

Cracks that start at a corner and run inward are the most common of all, because a corner has the least glass around it to spread the load.

Getting the old one off

Work in the cleanest room you have, because the new one goes on straight after. Lift from a corner — a strip of tape folded into a tab gives you something to pull without pressing on the cracked surface. Pull slowly and along the panel rather than up and away, so the adhesive peels rather than snaps.

Do not pick at a cracked sheet with a fingernail. Tempered glass fails into small blunt fragments rather than shards, but the broken edge is still glass.

Any adhesive left behind comes off with an alcohol wipe. Then clean the panel the way you would for a first fitting: alcohol, microfibre, tape for the dust, and check at a shallow angle against a light.

If the screen underneath is also damaged

Then the impact was larger than the protector could take, and that is worth being honest about: a 0.33mm sheet spreads and absorbs a hit, it does not make a phone drop-proof. Anyone who tells you a screen protector prevents all screen damage is selling something.

If it broke while you were fitting it, that is not a fault — it is what the other sheets in the pack are for. If it arrived chipped, cracked or cut for the wrong model, send us the order number and a photo and we replace it free; you do not need to send the broken one back.

Questions people ask

Should I replace a cracked screen protector?

Yes, within the week. Tempered glass is under tension by design, and once it has cracked that tension is gone, so it will not absorb a second knock the way it took the first. A crack that reaches the edge also lets dust under the adhesive, and the sheet starts to lift.

Did my screen protector save my screen?

If the protector cracked and the display under it did not, yes — the energy that broke the sheet did not reach the screen. A spider crack with a clear centre over the display shows where the impact landed.

How do I remove a cracked tempered glass protector?

Lift it from a corner with a strip of tape folded into a tab, and pull slowly along the panel rather than up and away, so the adhesive peels instead of snapping. Do not pick at it with a fingernail. Wipe any leftover adhesive off with an alcohol wipe before the new sheet goes on.

Why did my screen protector crack for no reason?

A single line running edge to edge, with no point of impact, is usually flex — the phone bent slightly in a back pocket or under a knee. Cracks that start at a corner are the most common of all, because a corner has the least glass around it to spread a knock.

What if my protector arrived cracked?
